It's surprising for those of us who have long loved American antiques ~ from humble farmer-built items to magnificent pieces of exceptional cabinetry ~ to realize the country's antiques business is just over a century old. It wasn't until the early 20th century that the first antiques shopkeepers opened their stores on avenues and roadsides throughout the land. This article offers a history of buying and selling American antiques, as well as discussing the many trends in collecting and displaying them.
